Throughout the complex ways of their provenance\, their changing uses and their connections to different protagonists they represent junctions of extended networks. \nThis year’s Conference\, organized by  Mainz University in cooperation with the  German Society for University Collections and addressed to curators of university and museum collections and scientists working with objects\, focusses on the networks of collections and the different perspectives on their objects. DESCRIPTION:The conference aims to explore how museums can contribute to a society where multiple voices are heard\, multiple perspectives are revealed and more people are – and feel – included and recognized. International speakers will reflect on political changes in Europe and the consequences for museums. In addition\, psychologists will shed light on how shame and openness are related to identity development\, and we shall learn more the status of knowledge and ways to improve our work with local societies and difficult issues. \nProgramme.

DESCRIPTION:The Laboratory Revolution 1850-1950\nThe Rise of the Laboratory and the Changing Nature of the University\nThe laboratory is the ultimate place where knowledge is created.  What had originally only been the workplace of alchemists and chemists\, by the end of the nineteenth century had become a standard element in the infrastructure of science.  The rise of the laboratory revolutionized the sciences in many ways and it continues to do so up to this moment. This is all common knowledge and well studied\, but what is not so well known is that laboratories also had a tremendous impact on the universities\, which in the nineteenth century were becoming the most common institution for science and scholarship.  Read more.

They are typically named after and identified with the town or city in which they are located. They have also been important architectural patrons\, and the buildings they have created tell us a great deal about their conception of their functions.
