SUMMARY:You shall be heard!? a conference about how (not) to share personal narratives
DESCRIPTION:The conference aims to explore how museums can contribute to a society where multiple voices are heard\, multiple perspectives are revealed and more people are – and feel – included and recognized. International speakers will reflect on political changes in Europe and the consequences for museums. In addition\, psychologists will shed light on how shame and openness are related to identity development\, and we shall learn more the status of knowledge and ways to improve our work with local societies and difficult issues. \nProgramme.

SUMMARY:The Laboratory Revolution 1850-1950
DESCRIPTION:The Laboratory Revolution 1850-1950\nThe Rise of the Laboratory and the Changing Nature of the University\nThe laboratory is the ultimate place where knowledge is created.  What had originally only been the workplace of alchemists and chemists\, by the end of the nineteenth century had become a standard element in the infrastructure of science.  The rise of the laboratory revolutionized the sciences in many ways and it continues to do so up to this moment. This is all common knowledge and well studied\, but what is not so well known is that laboratories also had a tremendous impact on the universities\, which in the nineteenth century were becoming the most common institution for science and scholarship.  Read more.

SUMMARY:Universities: space\, place and community
DESCRIPTION:  \nCourtesy University of Manchester.\nMore than most institutions\, universities have historically been defined in crucial ways by their relationship to spaces and places. They are typically named after and identified with the town or city in which they are located. They have also been important architectural patrons\, and the buildings they have created tell us a great deal about their conception of their functions. And in their use of their own space they have consciously or unconsciously manufactured academic communities and impacted on the communities beyond their walls. \nMost importantly today\, the tension between their global mission and their particular special location has come under scrutiny as governments see overseas students as a source of longer-term net migration. SUMMARY:University Museums Group Annual Conference
DESCRIPTION:Stuff and Knowledge: an exploration of the future of teaching and learning within university museums\nObjects have been intrinsic to teaching and learning within higher education and university museums since their very beginnings. Although the context may have changed from primarily knowledge-focused learning\, to include skills-based analytical learning\, collections and object-based learning still have an essential role to play within higher education today. \nFocusing on the development of the Teaching Excellence Framework and the current educational climate\, this conference will explore and debate the benefits and challenges of teaching with museum and departmental collections through innovative and provocative keynote addresses\, diverse case studies and illuminating panel discussions. \nUniversity Museums Group conferences are renowned for their networking opportunities\, and there will be plenty of spaces within the programme for delegates to meet\, share experiences and make new connections. \nRead more
